Sergio Espinosa, DMA

Music Director, New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving

Mexican conductor and violinist Dr. Sergio Espinosa has served as Music Director of the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving since 2007, bringing nearly two decades of artistic leadership to the orchestra and the North Texas community.

An accomplished educator, conductor, clinician, and musician, Dr. Espinosa also serves as Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Arlington and as a Principal Examiner for the International Baccalaureate Organization in Wales, United Kingdom. His passion for music education has taken him around the world, where he has led music teacher-training workshops and clinics throughout Europe, China, Australia, Latin America, Canada, and the United States.

Dr. Espinosa’s conducting career includes leadership positions with the Shoals Symphony Orchestra in Florence, Alabama; the UTA Symphony; and orchestras in Switzerland and France. He has also appeared as a guest conductor with ensembles in the United States, Mexico, and Italy, including the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional and the Orquesta de Cámara de Bellas Artes in Mexico.

His musical education spans Mexico, Switzerland, and the United States. He studied violin at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the Conservatoire de Neuchâtel in Switzerland, earned a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting from Ithaca College, and received his Doctoral Degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Iowa.

As a violinist, Dr. Espinosa has performed with numerous orchestras and was a member of the Boccherini String Quartet in Spain.

At NPOI, Dr. Espinosa’s extensive international experience meets a deep commitment to the local community. His leadership, energy, and belief in the power of live music continue to help shape the orchestra’s artistic identity while connecting audiences and musicians through memorable performances.
